Beautiful hardwood flooring in an Asheville, NC home

Engineered vs solid hardwood flooring

Solid hardwood is a timeless floor covering that continues to be installed by the most discerning homeowners. Traditionally, all floors were sanded, stained, and sealed in the home. But today, prefinished, or factory-finished, wood products are also available. Arbor Zen Hardwood Floors is a solid hardwood flooring retailer in Black Mountain, North Carolina. We have a wide selection of all types of hardwood as well as luxury vinyl, cork, bamboo, and more.

Solid wood

Strips or planks that make up solid hardwood floors, whether unfinished or prefinished, are milled from a single piece of wood. Factories apply powerful chemical sealers to the boards that are not available to on-site installers. Therefore, site-applied finishes are usually backed by warranties of 3 to 5 years while factory-applied treatments often have warranties of 5 to 25 years or more. Keep in mind that on-site finishing gives the floor a flush, not a beveled, look.

Engineered wood

Engineered hardwood flooring has a plywood, lumber, or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) core that is bonded to a layer of hardwood. Unlike solid hardwood, this high tech flooring can be placed in a basement. Cali Bamboo GeoWood is one of the newest products on the market. This hybrid plank flooring combines real hardwood with a limestone powder core vinyl plank construction. Warranties of 50-years or more are typical for any type of high quality engineered wood flooring.

Installation

Solid hardwood is usually nailed to a wood subfloor. After unfinished wood is installed in the home and finishing treatments are applied, it is left to acclimate to its environment. The process takes about two weeks. A prefinished solid or engineered hardwood floor can be installed in a day and walked on as soon as it is complete. The boards are usually connected to float over the subfloor. Solid hardwood floors last a lifetime and can be refinished many times. Most engineered wood flooring can be refinished once or twice.
