Solid & Engineered Hardwood Flooring
What is Solid Hardwood?
With solid hardwood flooring, you get plenty of options including your choice of wood species, finished or unfinished materials, stain color, and finish type. Matching all these with your very specific requirements and preferences means you’ll end up with the perfect flooring. Consider your in-house traffic, children, pets, visitors, and whether or not you need special considerations for specific rooms.
Solid flooring can never be installed beneath ground level, in areas such as basements, and they must be acclimated. The acclimation process can take several days, depending on the environment inside your home as well as the atmospheric conditions on your intended installation date. Your flooring specialist can give you more details on this process.
What is Engineered Hardwood?
Engineered hardwood flooring has a veneer of real wood, along with other materials, for a very durable and hard-wearing flooring covering. A backing material and core are situated beneath the veneer, with a wear layer topcoat above it for exceptional durability. The topcoat resists wear, stains, scratches, and scuffs for flooring that not only looks great but lasts a long time as well.
It’s possible that engineered flooring will have to acclimate too, depending on your conditions at the time of installation. Your flooring specialist will be able to give you more details, depending on the material you purchase.
Both materials are an excellent choice for nearly any space, and both can be refinished to bring them back to a like-new look. The solid hardwood can be refinished several times, while the engineered variety, only a few times, based on the thickness of the wood veneer.
